Week 12 & 13| Journal & Assignments

After meeting with Erika & Josh I was able to come up with a 2nd draft for their wedding album. Getting to know clients is a great experience. I noticed that as a designer, I became more in tune with content choice and more able to make suggestions based on their style preference. After making their change requests, I found it humorous when they asked for one of the pages in their 3rd draft copy  (Final Copy)changed back to a previous layout. (I had a feeling that would happen.) As a designer, one of the hardest things to do is edit something that you know is perfect (in your mind, anyway). When it comes down to it, it is their wedding album and it should be perfect to them. Knowing your place of when to suggest or just role with it comes with time. In this case I know before hand that she would not like the change, however, sometimes it is just better to show a client what they want, and pray you didn’t save over that last draft! (Which I stupidly did!)

Overall, it has been a great joy working with Dawn. I have learned so much in what it takes to run your own business. She is one of the most motivated people I know. She is literally obsessed (in a good way) with photography and ways to make her business grow. She is organized, not afraid to take risks, incredibly outgoing and shows great leadership. Sometimes I honestly do not know how she does it. She works until it gets done. If that means staying up until three in the morning, and waking up at 5 for a dawn (no pun intended) engagement session she will do just that! There is only one other person in this world that I know of that has that kind of dedication, my  father, and wouldn’t you know it they are both strong willed leo’s! She knows what she wants, how to achieve it, and is very open to suggestions. She also has the best intensions in educating her interns. She does not give busy work out. When you work with her, you are a part of her business. Right down to meeting, emailing, and requesting feedback from her clients, asking for her interns feedback and motivating them to work together on off hours, and working on real projects that, you as an intern, represent through her. To top it all off, she’s a mom! Like I said, sometimes I don’t know how she accomplishes it all. One thing is for certain, she is definitely an excellent role model, and I challenge any designer or photography intern to step up to the plate and work with her. You won’t be disappointed. I would love to work with her and Ashlyn again!

Oh, and by the way, she gave me one of the albums I worked on as a gift for my portfolio! How awesome is that?! I will also be attending and assisting Ashlyn (who will be Dawn’s second shooter) for this Fridays wedding, as an added bonus in working with clients. =)
